Georgia Sen. Saxby Chambliss is leading Democratic challenger Jim Martin by 6 points, according to a poll released yesterday in the runoff election scheduled for December. Former Govs. Mike Huckabee (AR) and Mitt Romney (MA), as well as Senator John McCain (AZ) have traveled to Georgia to stump for Chambliss. Mayor Rudy Giuliani (NY) is expected to arrive today. Huck PAC is making phone calls for Chambliss. Click here to get involved.
Former President Bill Clinton and Vice President Al Gore have both campaigned for Martin. Barack Obama isn't expected to show up, although he has done a radio ad for Martin.
In Minnesota, Senator Norm Coleman holds a 171 vote lead over former Air America personality Al Franken. The outcome may not be known for three weeks, according to CBS News.
The Democrats currently have 58 seats in the Senate, including Socialist Independent Bernie Sanders and Independent McCain supporter Joe Lieberman. Both caucus with the Democrats. Republicans have 40 seats. Coleman's and Chambliss's seats are extremely important, as the Democrats will have filibuster-proof majority of 60 if they are victorious in Minnesota and Georgia.
