Joe the Waitress: "Just Words, Just Speeches"

Blogger Caleb Brown posted this insightful e-mail on his blog. The e-mail recounts an experiment involving a waitress at Bob Evans with an Obama button (against regulations, by the way) and a homeless guy with a sign that said, "Vote for Obama; I need the money." The author of the e-mail decided to experiment.

He told the waitress that he thought the homeless man needed her tip more than she did, so even though she had earned it, he would give it to the homeless guy.

Of course, she stormed off. He followed through. The homeless guy was somewhat mystified, but grateful.

You see, when sharing the wealth becomes more than "just words, just speeches," it hurts somebody. That man took money the waitress had earned and gave it to somebody who had not been earning it. What right did the homeless man have to the waitress's money that gave the customer the right to steal it from her?

The problem with Obama's philosophy of redistribution is that it does not work in real life. It strips giving of its moral good and saddles society with hopelessness.

Right. This is **exactly** the same as making some CEO pay slightly higher taxes so that the waitress doesn't have to worry that the bridge she's driving over won't crumble beneath her, and that the homeless guy has a shelter at night.

Exactly the same!

"To each according to his need, from each according to his ability" sounds a whole lot like Obama's plan for "spreading the wealth" around. Except Obama didn't say that - Karl Marx did.

Jeff, thanks for reading. The only problem with what you say is that, first, "slightly higher taxes" may sound okay in a percentage. In reality, it's going to drive some small business owners into bankruptcy.
Second, just because you take money from me doesn't mean you'll do what's moral and right with it. Why should I trust Joe Biden, who gives less than 1/3 of 1% of his own considerable income to charity, to be generous with my money when I give far more than he does already?
Instead, let's trust the American people to choose to reach out with their money instead of forcing them to give it up.
Finally, it's unconstitutional. If you still believe it's a good plan, then change the constitution and give the fedreal government more power.
Peace!
